Tromsø Training Session Minutes

The Tromsø CASE training sessions were divided into two parts.

 

Training Session 1


Location: University of Tromsø, Norway


Date: 07/07/2011 - 13/07/2011

 

The first onshore training session consisted of the ResClim-GEO-8145 course "Polar Marine Sedimentary Environments" (5 ects) at the Department of Geology, University of Tromsø (UiT), from July 7 to 13. This course included the specialized course “Arctic and subarctic paleoenvironments” (T6) according to the topics defined in the original Work-Plan (Annex I of GA 238111).


The course was attended by the twelve CASE ESRs in addition to ten other PhD students from the University of Tromsø (Norway), the University of Bergen (Norway), the University of Iceland (Iceland), the Adam Mickiewicz University (Poland) and the Institute of Oceanology of the Polish Academy of Sciences (Poland). Furthermore, three master students from the Department of Geology at the University of Tromsø (Norway) attended the course, giving a total number of twenty-five participants.

Training Session 2


Location: RV “Helmer Hanssen” – Fram Strait, Greenland Sea and Norwegian Sea


Date: 15/07/2011 - 28/07/2011


The second part of the Tromsø training session was a training cruise, GEO-8144 (5 ects), taking place onboard the research vessel “Helmer Hanssen” of the University of Tromsø (previously named “Jan Mayen”) between July 15 and 28.


The training cruise included two specialized courses namely “Marine micropaleontology: benthic and planktonic foraminifera” (T7) and “Marine geology and geophysics cruise GEO-3144/8144” (T8) according to the topics defined in the original Work-Plan (Annex I of GA 238111).


The course was attended by the twelve CASE ESRs in addition to eight Ph.D. and M.Sc. students from the Department of Geology, University of Tromsø (Norway). The two CASE scientists Katrine Husum and Jacques Giraudeau participated in addition to the scientists Jan Sverre Laberg and Matthias Forwick from the Department of Geology, University of Tromsø.

The main objectives of the cruise were to elucidate climate and ocean variability in the Arctic in addition to teaching the students practical methods of marine geological and geophysical investigations. The students learned how to map the surface of the seafloor with a multibeam echo sounder and how to “look into” the sub-seafloor using a sub-bottom profiler and air-guns. Furthermore, the students learned how to collect samples from the sea floor with box and multi corers, in addition to longer sediment cores using piston and gravity corers, respectively. Some sediment cores were opened and analyzed on-board by the students. Micropaleontological sampling was also carried out, and the students were introduced to Arctic benthic and planktonic foraminiferal taxonomy. In order to show the students different sedimentary environments the cruise started in Longyearbyen and ended in Tromsø. The targeted areas were the continental slope west of Svalbard, the submarine Hovgård Ridge in the Fram Strait, fjords in east Greenland and the continental slope off Scoresby Sound, east Greenland. However, due to bureaucratic reasons and extensive sea-ice cover off east Greenland, the cruise plan had to be changed several times so that not all planned activities could be accomplished. However, the scientists and students were very content with the material and results they collected during the cruise.
