An other welcome to Frazer and Michael

Two other phD students join the CASE project on the 1st October 2010: Michael Blaschek and Frazer Davies. They will work at the Amsterdam University with Hans Renssen in the Paleoclimatology and Geomorphology Department.

 

Michael Blaschek will focus on a comparison of climate variability in the Arctic during the Eemian and Holocene interglacials in transient simulations performed with the LOVECLIM model. He will analyse the role of different components of the climate system (atmosphere, ocean, sea ice, vegetation). Model results will be evaluated using proxy-based reconstructions produced by other members of the CASE project.

 

Frazer Davies will analyse the changes in the freshwater budget in the Arctic during the Holocene in transient simulations performed with the LOVECLIM model. He will consider the various components of this budget (P-E, atmospheric and oceanic transport, river runoff, sea ice, ice bergs) and analyse the impact of various forcing factors such as changes in vegetation, ice sheets, insolation, greenhouse gases and solar forcing. Results for the Holocene thermal maximum will be compared with simulations with future anthropogenic forcing.

"The topic of modelling climate change in the Arctic caught my attention because it focuses on one of the most fascinating places in the world, the Arctic. The region of the North Pole responds very quickly on climate changes and makes it a good place to start investigating the interactions and counteractions from various climate forcings. As I'm interested in research on climate, climate change and future developments, it sounds quite promising to work within this project. My interest for numerical meteorology seems to fit in perfectly as well. I studied Meteorology at the University of Vienna with special emphasis on theoretical meteorology and worked as a research assistant at the University to gain some applied knowledge in scientific work.

I finished 2009 and worked afterwards at the Austrian Meteorological Service. As I wanted to broaden my glimpse at the scientific community I thought moving to Amsterdam and working on an international project should be just what I was hoping for. I'm looking forward to collaborating with the other early stage researchers and other members of the project.”

Frazer Davies

"My interest in contemporary and Holocene climate change stems from the culmination of my undergraduate degree in Geography (BSc Hons), received from the University of Liverpool in 2003, and my MSc in Climate Change and Risk Management, received from the University of Exeter in 2010. These degrees have allowed me to gain a detailed and holistic understanding of the issues surrounding climate change in the cryosphere, which is a particular interest of mine.

This PhD opportunity allows me to combine my research and personal interests, so choosing to undertake this PhD opportunity at VU University Amsterdam was a straightforward decision. Within the scope of the project I will have the opportunity to work with an experienced group of researchers at VU University Amsterdam, as well as being involved in the International Training Network (ITN). This is a strong aspect of this CASE project and will allow for international collaboration between the institutions.”
